The BMW 5 Series is a line of executive cars produced by the German automaker BMW since 1972. Known for its blend of performance, luxury, and cutting-edge technology, the 5 Series sits between the compact 3 Series and the flagship 7 Series in BMW’s lineup. It offers a variety of powertrains, including efficient four-cylinder engines, powerful V8s, and hybrid options, catering to diverse preferences and driving needs.

Is It worthy of the 5-series badge?

The latest 5-series is one of the most controversial cars that BMW has released. On paper, the 5-series seems to be regular business. But when you look past the spec sheet, that’s where the problems start. For the price you pay for the BMW badge, some say it doesn’t look worth it . Some float around the thought that if we Ignore the badge and the iconic kidney grille, it would be mistaken for a Honda. The design department has gone downhill since the launch of the M3 and M4.

Since the launch of the 1st generation 5-series, we have seen some iconic cars. The E60 is the most iconic of them all. A V10 in a family sedan is unheard of, and yet BMW did it. Yes, the rod bearings would give up the moment you start it up, but people still love it for what it represents. The older generations looked the part, but the latest one doesn’t. There is no doubt, that the car will be a joy to drive, but if you pay more than 80 lakh rupees, you expect it to look like nothing else on the road. It is too early to make a precise judgement, but for now, the prospect is disappointing.

What About The Indian Version?

BMW India has decided to launch the long-wheelbase variant in the Indian market. Reportedly, the launch is scheduled between July and October. However, the variants available don’t seem exciting. The 530i is sold as a 4-cylinder in global markets, and the top-of-the-line variant is a plug-in hybrid.

It isn’t all bad news though. The performance and efficiency figures are pretty satisfactory and the 540i can produce a staggering 375 horsepower from its turbocharged 6-cylinder engine which is mated with a hybrid system. Not to mention, that the pure electric i5 will be launched soon after the petrol and diesel variants are on sale.

Moreover, we are unsure whether the m-sport variants see the streets of India. The i5 M60 variant is capable of a mind-numbing 600 horsepower. The 5-series will start with a price tag of more than 75 lakh rupees which is lower than its rival, the Mercedes E-class. The pricing hasn’t been disclosed and varies significantly after RTO and other additional costs. But the pricing is what you would expect from a car in its segment.

The details for the Indian version are yet to be disclosed. For now, all we know is that it will offered as a long-wheelbase. As mentioned before, the 5-series seems to be a game-changer on paper. Unfortunately, the looks aren’t satisfactory for a company that gave us the F90 5-series, the E60 5-series and the E39 5-series.

If you want a car for the sole purpose of driving you around, there are very few cars on the market that can match the 5-series’s luxury. But if you wish for a car that looks alluring while giving the pure thrill of a classic 5-series, then this one might dishearten you. It may take time for people to get used to the dreary design language, but it makes up for it with its luxury.
